Too often the deeds of extraordinary people who have had a
profound impact on the lives of the people they have touched go
unnoticed. Is it because these individuals selflessly give of themselves
for the bigger good of others and not for any personal gain or recognition? I
have had the pleasure of meeting some extraordinary people who have
inspired so many people including myself. They take pride in making a
difference, and will go the extra mile by instinctually putting the needs
of others before themselves.
One such person is affectionately known as Ms. Paulene Harvey,
she is part owner and operator of Big It Up International. Ms. Harvey
founded the Youth in Time Organization as a result of a brief encounter
with a 17 year old cancer patient, who made the statement “I feel as if my
time is up” this had such a profound impact on Ms. Harvey reacted by
immediately reassuring the young girl that her time was not over, it is
now. Moved by this encounter Ms. Harvey felt compelled to
do something, an would later conceptualize the Youth in Time organization
to provide a voice all young people whose lives have been impacted by cancer,
providing them a platform to express themselves in an artistic and meaningful
way as well as the opportunity to share their story.
Ms. Harvey now needed a home to facilitate the program, she
approached Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto, located at 24 Cecil St, Toronto,
with her vision who immediately offered her the space to do just that. Gilda’s
Club of Greater Toronto is a Non-Profit Organization who offers a wide range of
networking and support groups, educational and therapeutic workshops, expert
speakers, recreational and social activities, all free of charge, all under one
roof, all year long. Members are also free to spend some peaceful time alone in
any of their cozy wellness rooms. Donations of money, time and talent have kept
Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto open since 2001. http://www.gildasclubtoronto.org/What's_Happening/News_Page/Teens_Tell_Their_Stories.aspx
This is only one example of the extraordinary things that
extraordinary people such as Ms. Harvey has done to impact the lives of others
and for that she should be applauded. Her most resent mission is participating
in the #NoHairSelfie movement of the Princes Margaret Cancer
Center, where she will along with others, participate by shaving their heads or
by daring others to shave theirs on February 4, World Cancer Day, for
the cause. http://www.nohairselfie.com/ please
stay tuned as we follow the extraordinary and profound gestures that people
such as Ms. Harvey do.
